Grain is the cutting element in a grinding wheel. They are generally bounded to each other and some gap is also being kept in between to dissipate heat. Here we may have different types of grains or different sizes among same type for different uses. 

Grade: it represents the hardness of grinding wheel I.e. how strongly the grains are bounded to each other. 

In general we use soft grade for hard material and vice versa.
