EGR is used to transfer a controlled small amount of exhaust gases in intake manifold or directly in combustion chamber (not sure) which I think is done to reduce the temperature of combustion because these incombustible gases takes up the heat during combustion......so it's bad for power  as the hot exhaust gases takes some space in combustion chamber and also preheats the intake charge (which is opposite of what required) but good for combustion process I think...
