To reduce the internal pressure.It is hard to store gas in spherical containers. So, the only option left is to store in cylinders with little alterations at the bottom n top portion.

because in cylinders there is no sharp corners or edges like rectangular or other shaped container that's why there is no stress concentration.

To reduce the stress concentration at the sharp edges of the others shape like rec. sqr. trin. or any other shape. the Best shape is to use spherical shape but it seems not possible . In refineries the big spherical containers are used for storage , but for distribution purpose the cylindrical shape is the most suitable shape.

Cylindrical shape along its lenght is used to store more amount of gas or fuel.since for the same radius cylinders have more volume than spheres.

High pressure cylinders are manufactured by using seamless tubes and hence cylindrical shape is  easy to manufacture by hot spinning.  This might be one of the reasons.

Sharp corners increase the stress concentration, in order to reduce that spherical shells are being used world ? wide.

The most efficient shape for withstanding high pressure is a sphere but that would be costly to manufacture. A cylinder with a domed top and a domed bottom (look underneath, the flat base is actually welded around the outside, the bottom of the gas container is actually domed) is a much cheaper shape to manufacture whilst still having good strength to resist the internal gas pressure.

Pressure distribution. You can have it in almost any shape, but reinforcement is needed. Bigger cost, bigger weight, etc.

To reduce stress concentration.. In shapes like rectangle, square it increases drastically which in turns if used need strong n more thickness material to store

u all are partially corret but thing beyond ....think practically the reason is safety as in case of accident if the upper supply valve of cylinder breaks than the pressure or thrust exerted is in horizontal direction only in y - plane only which is observed by earth(ground) and cylinder does not move any where in standing position where as if u use sperical shape to store they moves in random direction and the pressure or thrust is enoungh high to produce huge casualties. any more question mail me on brovin.brovin@gmail.com

The force acting on the area of the cylinder end is the same whether it is a flat surface or cylindrical, but there is more material surface area if the end is cylindrical and so tne material can be thinner as there is less stress per square inch

Several of the previous comments speak of "stress concentration" avoidance as the reason for the use of the cylindrical form. This is a misunderstanding of the term "stress concentration."

A stress concentration occurs when there is a sharp change in section area such as a hole, a notch, or a reenternant corner. This would not be the case with a pressure vessel with flat sides such as a rectangular box.

If a flat sided vessel is used, the problem that dominates is the bending stresses at the edges of the flat plate. These are required to sustain the required angle at the corner, and they can often be severe.

gas cylinders are used b/c gas required seamless so it difficult to make seamless in rectangular, square for the sake of that cylindrical shape is easy for caulking process i think so

Due to the lesser value of forces, lesser stresses are developed in the cylinder and it is much stronger. Theshape of the cylinder also plays an important role. The pressure is distributed evenly and there is no concentration of force. Hence, there is no weak or break down point in the body

There is something called hoop stress. This applies only for gas applications. when gas is stored on a container there are stresses which act on longitudinal and transverse sections. None other than a cylinder will give you a efficient shape to cope up such stress
