Cores allow us to incorporate holes in our molding. They can be of various shapes and more than one core can be used in a molding.

Most cores are made up of sand, however they can also be made up of ceramic or metal.

Without a core for making cavities the part would be solid. Also, they help with rough forming of a part (having less material for decreased weight). And lastly for adding in integral holes.
