HOW

You can gain higher pressure without giving much concern for temperature. in the single stage pressure is limited because of max temp. The compressor can bear.

by lowering the temp by inter cooler,lesser work required by compressor to achieve same compressor ratio as before ultimately increase efficiency,

I have a bachelor in mechanical engineering. I already finished my final project.

input work will be lesser in specific compression.

Area under T-s diagram will be smaller meaning that work of compressor will be smaller..

The decrease in temperature will leads to decrease in work of the compressor

The Intercooler is useful when the compression system is split in two stages. In some cases, splitting the compression ration in two stages can improve the COP. Decreasing the temperature of refrigerant vapour entering to the second stage is needed.

HOW

it is simply tending adiabatic curve to isothermal curve ..... which will eventually reduce amount of work input....... refer to image attached .....

primary objective of inter-cooling is to obtain higher pressure at lower temperature......eventually it reduced amount of work to be done on gases.....which results in higher efficiency

I think when the air is compressed, it will be expaned so we use the intercooler for cooling the air after the compressor so we can compress more or more ....

Improve  Activeness of this Compressor. decrease temperature in not good for a Compressor. Because Air compressor is a system that squeezes air amount. click here

The higher the temperature the harder it is to compress air in smaller volume or in other words the more energy you need to do it. So - lower temperature, smaller amount of energy, higher temperature, larger amount of energy. So once you compress it on stage one, its temperature increases due to molecular collisions in the small volume, if you take away energy in the form of heat, its temperature will fall and now you can again compress it with significant savings of energy because the decrease in temperature has reduced molecular movement inside the small volume making it possible to compress them with smaller amount of energy. So in the end it results with increased effectiveness. This type of system can also be used to take away water vapor from the air that's being compressed, because as you compress the air and you reduce its temperature some of the water vapor inside will condense and fall down in the form of drops.

It leads to less compression work to second stage of compression, as at first compression temp goes up and pressure develops to get more compressed pressure at output it must intercooled. As pressure increases temp increses so, to avoid higher temp at output it must intercooled
