# centrifugal pump

## Question

Is anyone tell me all about centrifugal pump.?  Like head, pressure at discharge closed, flow.etc

Roshan, those Pumps, get their general name from the principles of work, it uses the hi speed of water sliding over the alabes, to convert in pressure, the fluid been moving literaly scape from the impulsor from the centre of device in a radial bound, and the fluid makes a FUGA. Centrifugal...means scape from the center.

The impulsor, has a shape of voluta, like if you bend your hand and try to push a fluid, but like your hand there is 2 or more  alabes around a center. The center literally cut the fluid filling the device and make it slide over the inside curv (concave surfice), because the torque ( pair of force applied provoque the rotation), applied to axe, this pressure is transformed in speed, and when the fluid scape the fluid literally crash against an outside body (pump body), and it is transformed in HEAD OF PRESSURE just right in the exit, if it is closed or the flow is bigger than the orifice can handle. If the exit is closed, the pump can achieve the maximun Head of Pressure, called pressure at discharge closed.

Centrifugal pumps can work with closed exit, but fluid gain heat ( and eventually the ceramic seal in the center burst).

This kind of pump can be found in automatic transmmission, working together with a TURBINE, or in moviment of fluid like water or any fluid.

Pumps are two types

Positive displacement pump

dynamic pressure pumps or roto dynamic pumps

Centrifugal pumps are come under rotodynamic pumps...it works on bernaulis principle..depends upon the requirement single stage double stage , single entry , double entry is there.. In a single stage pumps impeller rotates in a casing of spiral or volute form.. Fluid enters the impeller axially through the eye then by centrifugal action continuous radially and discharges around the entire circumference. The fluid is passing through the impeller recieves energy from the vanes giving increase of pressure and velocity.. The kinetic energy of the discharge fluid is partly converted to pressure energy by suitable design of impeller vanes and casing..

Function of impeller

Is to give kinetic energy to the liquid which is passing through the impeller by centrifugal force so that water is thrown out from the impeller by high kinetic energy and because of this a suction is created and continuous discharge of liquid is possible. When the pump is primed and the impeller thrown out the liquid to the periphery by the impeller thus vacuum is created and thus continuous flow is obtained...

Function of volute casing

Is to convert kinetic energy of liquid coming out of the periphery of the impeller into potential energy (pressure energy). It works bernaullis principle where there is a gradual increase in cross section because of this kinetic energy converted to potential energy
