Oil & Gas Air cooled Heat Exchange Header Plug Torque Calculation

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I'm trying to find the required torque for stainless gaskets (washer) and stainless plugs. approximately 1-1/8 Dia plug .

Looking for 5% crush on washer.

What is maximum torque required to compromise threads on plug/plug sheet and What is the correct torque required to pre load plug threads?

What is the torque required to crush washer (gasket) 5% Max condition.

Thanks & Regards

Depend on you bolt/washer material, you could calculate it using VDI 2230 Part 1 and Part 2.

I don't have it on hand right now.

Other than that you could use this

http://www.tribology-abc.com/calculators/e3_6a.htm

Input the correct size and material, you minimum torque should be in column

Total tightening torque MA

Hello Henry Thanks a lot for your replay .

Bolt and Washer both made up with stainless steel.

And i would say it's not a Bolt it's a Plug difference is Bot has a Nut but for Plug we don't have Nut.Look at the Last picture which i was shred above only Plug and washer. It's like we look 1 inch thickness SS plate and we did a 0.625 Dia through hole and threads, then we simply tightening the bolt on that threads hole,in this case we used washer to avoid leaking.

The link you maintained above that was pretty good.i would say a big thanks for that.

But how to calculate what is the torque required to crush washer (gasket) 5% Max condition. How to calculate washer crush ?

What is the correct torque required to pre load plug threads(1 inch thickness plate hole threads )  ?
