There are various configurations for centrifugal pumps, and different categories as well. Seals for instance could be packing, mechanical seal cartridge or standard, or lip seals. Some have mechanical seal with backup packing as well. Impellers can be enclosed or have open vanes, trimmed for desired pressure and flow, clockwise or counter-clock wise depending on rotation and orientation of volute. Centrifugal pumps should never run dry. Should be flooded or primed before start-up. (Centrifugal pumps can not pump gas's or vapor) Failure to do so will cause cavitation in parts like impeller, housing, and stuffing box; seals will fail as well. If ran for excessive time dry may damage other components.
