  1. This is nice, and the same thought may also apply to using local technology over big companies products. Also, as the population tends to decline (assuming declining birth rates), there won't be the need to employ that many people (and there won't be that many people!), and there will be a stronger drive towards more efficient processes. I believe first world is already living it, whereas some countries, such as Brazil, may enter this state in one decade. This is one push we will encounter and may be a challenging cultural change in some companies.
  2. Dear DrD, I've been lurking around this blog for some time and seen you replying to other posts. I'm more of an information hoarder and never interacted much on any media I'm on. But I decided to step out of my confort zone to show you gratitude and recognize your effort here. I followed some question posts and seen your answers. I haven't hanged around here very much, and didn't know about the mechanics corner! (I started paying attention to the notifications here very recently).   7. Hi, Well, I think one question remains: how?! I'll try to answer according to what I studied for a presentation, maybe it's not accurate or even wrong, since it was some years ago. As said, the forging proccess results in compressive residual stress in the surface. When under tensile strength the sum of the residual and applied stress willl be lower. Well, I'm not sure now, but I think cracks will in most cases begin in the surface, and incresing the resistance there will result in an overall increase of resistance. Anyway it will "hold" the yield of the material a little bit longer. TL;DR: residual stress in the surface inhibits early yield and/or crack formation. I sure welcome all critics and suggestions, I am also curious about the science behind it.
