Dear Gill,

Some years ago, one of my students did a kinematic and dynamic analysis of a knitting machine for a senior project. It was a great piece of work.

Can you describe your idea in words, preferably with a few pictures/diagrams? If so, I may (or may not) be able to help you.

My wife has a 1904 Gearhart sock knitting machine. She cranks out everything from baby booties to socks that fit Shaquille's size 22 feet! It's fascinating to watch and realize that someone created these more than a hundred years ago and sold them for $11. Now you can hardly find one for $1100.
