Very expensive, complicated to control, contains substances that are harmful if released (pure ammonia is quite aggressive and toxic, which is why refrigerants were invented), not responsive to demand (people opening and closing the door all the time). For a practical household appliance, you want a machine that is simple, safe, and practical. This is also a problem with complicated solar power systems that might work for someone with technical savvy that doesn't mind constantly working on it, but the average home owner couldn't possibly service or derive any net benefit from.
