Shear pins

Question

Hello.

If I have the option to install multiple shear pins made from different material, ie brass/mild steel in a tool, is the shear force shared across the combination of pins or will the shearing occer when only the shear rating of the highest pin occurs? For example if pinning 2 x brass and two steel, are the brass irrelevant?

It depends entirely on the geometry and loading of each pin....they all need to be calculated out as if there is no other present and the material selected as appropriate...they will only shear when they exceed their individual shear loading...take care to ensure double shear is calculated where appropriate.
